A look, a gesture, a word - like poison in our souls

insults, that hit us at the core

like a feverish infection

an enormous destructive energy

ignited like an invisible fuse

What is a grievance? When does a slight begin? Have I offended you? I offend in order to punish. Offended, I cringe. I offend myself. Offended I offend someone because I have been offended.

A piece about mortification as the rotten tooth of almost every human conflict. Thoughtlessness, discrimination and abuse of authority. An ignorant little comment gnawing at our self-worth. A community that is ridiculed, a religion or culture that is savaged. From a minor affront to a humiliation with devastating consequences.
